The History of Vagus Nerve Stimulation
The vagus nerve, or cranial nerve X, is a part of the autonomic nervous system, which controls functions of the body that are not under voluntary control, such as heart rate and digestion. In the neck, the vagus nerve travels near the carotid artery and jugular vein. Interestingly, neurologists in the 19th century noted that applying pressure on the carotid artery in the neck, and thus the vagus nerve, could stop seizures. Recent research found that stimulation of the vagus nerve in animals decreases both epileptic activity in the EEG and the frequency and severity of seizures. After proven seizure reduction in animals using VNS, several controlled human trials demonstrated a significant reduction in seizures with minimal side effects. In 1997, the FDA approved vagus nerve stimulation in patients older than 12 with refractory partial epilepsy. Mounting clinical experience also demonstrates efficacy and safety in children and in patients with generalized epilepsies.
I cant imagine what kind of person I would have turned out to be if I had to live in a culture where it is survival of the fittest, “fight to the death” kind of lifestyle. I guess when life ends up becoming like “the walking dead” or when a large astroid is headed towards earth, literally putting us under the heat like a tea in a pot, do we see the nature and colour of humans. But still, its hard to fully appreciate the human condition and assume it is so when there are also those who act opposite of what we are inclined to assume about human nature. Its hard to fully appreciate the strength and weakness of human morals during these kind of times..the inconsistency and wavering reliance of it.
Anyway, I should get back to this novel before my break ends. Sigh, Nightshifts. Geeze.

YUP. Side effects of adjusting to night shifts. I was lucky to have had preceptors in 4th year who were day shift RNs. I actually had to request for night shifts. So in total, x4 night shifts in one yr.
My 5th night shift of the week ends tomorrow morning and the month of April is going to end soon!

At least two dead, 64 injured as two bombs hit Boston Marathon finish line, more explosive devices found
Two bombs exploded near the finish of the Boston Marathon on Monday, killing at least two people, injuring at least 23 others and sending authorities rushing to aid wounded spectators, race organizers and police said.
Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis said the two explosions occurred about 50 to 100 metres apart “simultaneously” on Boylston Street and there was multiple casualties at each location.
One runner, a Rhode Island state trooper, said he saw at least two dozen people with very serious injuries, including missing limbs.
A third explosion occurred at the JFK Library at about 4:00 p.m. but no injuries were reported, Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis said at a press conference Monday afternoon. Davis said numerous bags were left at the scene by runners and each is being treated as a possible threat.
